MANILA, Philippines – Decisive.

Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda had this to say about President Rodrigo Duterte as he praised the latter for paving the way for the creation of the Bicol International Airport (BIA).

Salceda, an erstwhile Liberal Party stalwart who supported the candidacy of Sen. Grace Poe in the 2016 presidential elections, feted Duterte for green-lighting of the P700 million worth of infrastructure for the Bicol International Airport (BIA) along with the bidding out of another P1.71 billion for its expansion — a feat which took him only four months compared to the previous administration’s three years.

“He lost here during the elections, but he still showed that he is doing his job. What took the previous administration three years to do, he was able to do in four months,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying. “Duterte knows what the people need and care about every day. Here in Bicol, our strongest potential is tourism. This will also help our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). We owe it to him for being decisive.”

Salceda said the airport, along with the planned multi-billion peso railway that would connect Legazpi City to Matnog, Sorsogon, could mark a golden age in tourism for the province.

“In Bicol, our future is tourism. It is the most horizontal industry,” he said. “In 2025, combine it with the train, we can achieve 5 million (tourists).”

At the same time, Salceda admitted to feeling a bit sad over fellow Bicolano Vice President Leni Robredo’s departure from Duterte’s Cabinet.

“Sayang. We always need Bicol voices in the Cabinet,” he said.
