The chairman of the Senate committee, Senator Richard 'Dick' Gordon, claimed on television that he believes two senators are involved in self-proclaimed hitman Edgar Matobato’s confession about being a part of President Rodrigo Duterte alleged “Davao Death Squad” (DDS).
Gordon was the one who cleared the President of any liability for the extrajudicial killings that were linked to him courtesy of Matobato’s confession. Matobato claimed that he was a part of the DDS, which operated under orders of the former Davao mayor and current Philippine President.
Senator Gordon, the current chairman of the committee on justice and human rights, accused Senator Leila De Lima and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV of conspiring to oust President Duterte by smearing his name with blood.
Ironically, Duterte’s rhetoric is – by itself – laden with violence.
Senator Gordon pointed out that Senator de Lima’s credibility has been “shot” and claims that she has “a lot of explaining to do.” He also boldly claims that the two senators were working together, despite his lack of proof against his baseless accusations.
The committee report released by Gordon stating that the EJKs were not state-sponsored was signed by 11 senators. De Lima and Trillanes opted not to sign.
Matobato filed a complaint against Duterte before the Office of the Ombudsman. The complaint was for murder, kidnapping, violation of Republic Act No. 9745 or the Anti-Torture Act, and violations of R.A. No. 9851, or the Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide, and Other Crimes Against Humanity.
“It will go against him. I don’t know what the case is. If it is the same as the Senate, it will not prosper,” Senator Gordon said.
