BREAKING NEWS - A Miracle indeed! Dubai OFW wakes up from 9-month coma, prepares to go home. MUST WATCH THIS!
An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Dubai has finally awaken from a nine-month coma and is now ready to go home to her family; many thanks to the exceptional care she received from a hospital and the love of people who helped her recover.
The Filipina, identified in a Gulf News story as Perlite Almonte, 35 years old, used to work as supervisor for a Dubai courier company.
In April 18, 2015, she was found unconscious inside the bathroom of the house where she was staying. She has since slipped into a coma.
According to Dr. Zeyad Al Rais, Head of Critical Care Department at Rashid Hospital, the Filipina suffered from intracerebral hemorrhage – a life-threatening type of stroke caused by bleeding within the brain tissue.
“Perlite suffered from an intracerebral hemorrhage due to aneurysmal bleeding,” said Dr. Al Rais.
She had to undergo surgical intervention to drain the blood. But due to the critical location of the bleeding, the respiratory and hemodynamic functions were affected and she had to be attached to a ventilator for more than two weeks.
“Hence the decision was taken to perform tracheostomy, which helped her to gradually be weaned off the mechanical ventilation,” the doctor explained. “We also started early physiotherapy to enhance her muscular power, while she was in coma.”
Back in January 2016, or nine months after admission at the hospital, Almonte regained consciousness which enabled Dr. Rais to perform intensive active physiotherapy coupled with neurological rehabilitation plan.
“Now, after nine months on being comatose on ventilator with tracheostomy tube, I am happy to say that the patient is fully conscious,” Dr. Rais said.
Almonte has since been weaned off her ventilator and was able to regain her motor skills.
Speaking to Gulf News, the OFW said she is very thankful for the treatment she received at the Rashid Hospital. After nearly two years of confinement, she has considered the doctors and staff of the hospital a family.
“I am glad that I am recovering and I can’t wait to go to the Philippines to see my children,” she said.
Her two children were flown in last year to help in her recovery through the kindness of Ray Angulo, a Dubai Health Authority-accredited social worker who has regularly visited her.
Rashid Hospital, one of the most equipped and specialized critical care departments in the UAE, is now working on an intensive rehabilitation plan for the Filipina.
“Our aim is to make her independent as much as possible so that she can lead a regular life,” Dr. Rais said.
