The impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano against President Rodrigo Duterte has been rolled out in the House of Representatives, according to the Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas. Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez transmitted the impeachment case to the rules committee. Amidst this advancement of the case, many government officials still believe that the case will just eventually be ruled out easily, as the president continues to get many supports.

“I think there isn’t much support (for the impeachment complaint),” Rep. Reynaldo Umali, chairman of the House Committee on Justice, said in an interview as he firmly believes that majority support for the Chief Executive is stronger than ever.

Furthermore, Umali said he does not believe that the impeachment case “will gain ground.”

“I doubt if it is going anywhere,” he said.

Umali said the massive support that the President continues to enjoy is evident in the comments that his fellow lawmakers post in their mobile group.

“Whenever I check on our (online) thread in Congress, I can see that support for the President is even getting stronger,” he said.

According to Malaya, the Deputy Speaker Miro Quimbo said last month that 15 of 32 LP lawmakers allied with the House majority have agreed not to support the impeachment complaint filed by opposition Rep. Gary Alejano (PL, Magdalo) against Duterte and an impeachment complaint that Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said he was planning to file against Vice President Leni Robredo, the highest elected LP member.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo described the impeachment complaints against Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo would be “destructive” for all.

Panelo shared the President’s sentiment about the impeachment case and said: “Instead of focusing on the national concerns, servicing the people, we’ll be engaged in politics. We have had enough of that for the last so many decades.”

Panelo is optimistic that any effort to impeach Duterte would not succeed.

“There is an overwhelming majority number in the Congress that supports the President, as well as the overwhelming majority of the Filipinos in support of him, too. I think the impeachment is only intended for propaganda by the one who will file it and those who are supporting it to smear the President. But I don’t think it will ever succeed.”  he said.
