Despite the ongoing battle in Marawi City, government troops, police, and residents still managed to soldier on and raise the Philippine flag during the country’s celebration of Independence Day this June 12, 2017.
Policemen from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) said they hope that the Philippine flags will motivate their comrades who are still fighting terrorists in Marawi.

One of them even said, “Para sa Araw ng Kalayaan at pampalakas loob sa tropa. Mapupuno ang Marawi ng bandila natin.”

On the other hand, residents became tearful upon seeing the raised flags, a nationally recognized symbol of independence and peace, amidst the war going on in the city which took the lives of many civilians and soldiers.

“We will not allow any group to overthrow the government,” said Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandamra as he addressed the citizens at Marawi City Hall.

“As much as I wanted not to show my emotions… Pero ‘yung devastation na naramdaman ng aking mga constituents ay talagang napakabigat sa akin (But the devastation that my constituents have experienced is really weighing heavily on me). But we will rise up again,” Gandamra said as tears fell from his eyes.

Gary Mueco, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) city chief, also showed his vulnerable side when he heard the speech of Gandamra.

Mueco said that the flag-raising ceremony is symbolic of the peace they will soon achieve as he recalled how he lost his men during the battle.

Meanwhile, Lanao del Sur Vice Governor Mamintal Adiong Jr. also became very emotional as he apologized to the refugees who are currently suffering in the middle of celebrating Ramadan.

According to the military officials, they did everything they can in order to end the war in Marawi City in time for Independence Day. Unfortunately, the Maute terrorists refuse to give up their onslaught.

Still, Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), decided to push through with the Independence Day rites.
“Itong pag-celebrate ng Araw ng Kalayaan ay isang importanteng bagay na dapat huwag nating kalimutan,” Padilla told DZMM.

As of now, the military is not issuing a deadline for the end of their battle. However, they assured every citizen that they are doing everything in their power to defeat the Maute terrorists.
